At last, springtime has arrived! So has springtime maintenance to be done to your vehicle, like changing the tires. Always have your tires balanced to avoid unpleasant wheel vibration, and since constant hopping on the pavement will cause the tires to wear at a rapid rate. Also get your wheels aligned–adjusting the angles of the tires affects how they make contact with the road. Not only is it dangerous to drive on uneven tires, but more resistance to the road surface means more pressure on the rubber, which leads to very quick wear and tear. Plus, a proper alignment results in a smoother drive and in savings on your gas receipts.
While you’re in for a tire change, it is a great time to perform a quick inspection on your vehicle. With the vehicle on the hoist and off the ground, it’s easy to look for signs of damage. Winter is our harshest season; ice, cold and water can beat up a vehicle.
The mechanic can check your engine air filter, your cabin air filter and your fuel filter. Filters can become plugged with debris and lose their effectiveness. A clogged cabin air filter, for instance, can lead to underperformance of the heating and cooling systems, as well as a weakened airflow from the cabin vents. Fluids must also be checked. Your power steering, brake, or transmission fluids are cheap and easy to change, but forgoing this simple step can lead to expensive repairs, not to mention compromised safety. Consider a brake inspection; slush and salt can wash away the lubricant, resulting in uneven or premature wear. And your undercarriage is in the direct line of fire of road salt and other debris. Constant abrasion can result in corrosion or malfunction.
